LITTLE TALKS // lessons from a one year old

You know that stage of babyhood where peek-a-boo is quite literally the funniest, most entertaining thing in the entire world? It’s amazing. The effort to make a baby laugh is cents on the dollar to the cost of making a teenager laugh. I mean, if all I had to do was slap on my mom voice and smile “well hey there!” in my best baby voice when my older ones walk in the room, I’d be mom of the year.

But the baby? He’s easy to please. I can cover my eyes, aimless ask “where’d mama go?” and then reveal the big secret. I WAS BEHIND MY HANDS THE ENTIRE TIME. …and it was hilarious. But it did get me thinking. What if we greeted everyone through the lens of the same way we’d greet a baby?

I mean don’t play peek-a-boo with the bank teller, that’d be weird. But I do feel like there’s something here. What if we smiled more on purpose. What if we lit up when our spouses got home. What if we sang praises about the presence of our children. What if when our kids replied “can we go outside?” We said “last one’s a rotten egg.” …then raced them to the door.

I just think there’s something to ACTING, and equally important, REacting like a child. Get excited. …about the really mundane and normal things and I bet it’ll change your life.
